Rivers State Government Approves N85,000 New Minimum Wage for Workers

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced the approval of a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants in the state. This decision was made during a closed-door meeting with representatives from organized labor under the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council at Government House in Port Harcourt.

The implementation of the new wage will commence in November 2024, surpassing the national minimum wage. Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of Rivers State Civil Service, expressed satisfaction with the governor’s decision, emphasizing that this is a significant development for civil servants in the state.

A technical committee has been established to address potential arrears related to the new wage, with further details to be provided later. Labor leaders have commended Governor Fubara for his commitment to workers' welfare, positioning Rivers State alongside Lagos as a top-paying state in Nigeria.
