Man Attempts Suicide on Radio Mast Over Fuel Scarcity, Rescued by Police in Kwara

 


A man who climbed a radio mast in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, with the intention of committing suicide due to fuel scarcity and the high cost of living has been rescued by the police. The incident occurred on Monday, July 8, 2024.

According to reports, the man, whose identity has not been revealed, scaled the radio mast located at the Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara) premises. He threatened to jump off the mast, citing the fuel scarcity and the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy as his reasons for wanting to end his life.

Upon receiving the distress call, the police quickly mobilized to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The Kwara State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, stating that the police were able to persuade the man to come down from the mast safely.

The man was subsequently taken into custody for further questioning and to receive necessary assistance. The police are currently investigating the matter to determine if there were any other underlying issues that may have contributed to his decision to attempt suicide.

This incident highlights the growing concerns and frustrations among Nigerians regarding the fuel scarcity and the economic challenges faced due to the removal of fuel subsidy. Many citizens have expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation, with some resorting to desperate measures like the attempted suicide.
