Fuel Price Hikes Raise Concerns Among Parents as Schools Resume

As schools reopen across Nigeria, parents and guardians are expressing deep concerns over the recent surge in fuel prices, which has risen from N568 to N897 per litre. This increase is expected to significantly impact transportation costs, school fees, and daily living expenses, exacerbating the financial strain on families already grappling with inflation.

Many parents, particularly those with children attending schools far from home, have reported that the hike in fuel prices has made commuting increasingly unaffordable. For instance, transport fares for school buses have surged from N40,000 to N65,000, forcing some families to withdraw their children from these services entirely.

In response to the economic pressures, the Edo State Government has indefinitely postponed the resumption of all schools, originally set for September 9, to alleviate tension stemming from the fuel crisis. This decision has sparked criticism from the opposition, who argue that it sacrifices educational opportunities for political maneuvering.

Parents are calling for government intervention to provide relief and ensure that their children can continue their education amidst rising costs and economic challenges.
