Eghe Ogbemudia Impeached as Egor Council Chairman Amid Allegations of Misconduct
Eghe Ogbemudia, the chairman of Egor Local Government Area in Edo State and daughter of the late General Samuel Ogbemudia, has been impeached alongside her vice chairman, Frank Osawe. The impeachment was carried out by the legislative arm of the council on December 27, 2024, following allegations of **gross misconduct**, including abuse of office, financial misappropriation, and unlawfully withholding statutory allowances from council members.
The motion for impeachment was initiated by Councillor Nosakhare Isiegbuwa and supported by several other councillors. A seven-member panel had previously investigated the allegations and found both Ogbemudia and Osawe guilty. The council's actions were formalized in the Edo State Government Gazette, which documented the impeachment proceedings as per local government regulations.
In addition to the impeachment of Ogbemudia and Osawe, several principal officers of the legislative arm were suspended for failing to collaborate effectively with local government chairmen and for neglecting their responsibilities, particularly regarding timely salary payments for councillors.
Following the impeachment, Kelvin Eguakun was sworn in as the acting chairman of the council. In response to her impeachment, Eghe Ogbemudia has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the process was illegal and driven by a minority of councillors influenced by external forces seeking access to local government funds. She called for calm among residents and insisted that she had always acted within the law during her tenure.
