NDLEA Arrests 929 Suspects and Seizes 2.6 Tonnes of Drugs in Kwara Within 12 Months
In 2024, the Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) achieved significant milestones in combating drug-related offenses. The agency arrested 929 individuals—839 males and 90 females—and intercepted 2.6 tonnes of hard drugs, including cannabis, tramadol, diazepam, methamphetamine, cough syrup laced with codeine, and cocaine/crack. Cannabis was the most prevalent substance seized, totaling 1,455.529 kilograms.
In addition to these arrests, the NDLEA conducted a mop-up operation, removing 1.5 tonnes of cannabis from the streets to mitigate its societal impact. The agency also arrested 185 drug users during a raid on drug joints; these individuals received counseling at the drug demand reduction unit and were reintegrated with their families.
Furthermore, the NDLEA secured 133 convictions at the Federal High Court, resulting in the forfeiture of 14 vehicles, 12 motorcycles, and monetary assets to the federal government.
Collaborating with the state government, the NDLEA initiated a drug testing policy for 261 new students at Kwara State University (KWASU), all of whom tested negative. The agency commended the support from the state government and other security agencies and urged parents and guardians to monitor their children's activities to prevent involvement in drug-related activities.
To enhance its operations, the NDLEA called for additional operational vehicles and the completion of its rehabilitation center.
These efforts underscore the NDLEA's commitment to reducing drug abuse and trafficking in Kwara State.
