FG Introduces Tax-Free Allowances for University Teachers
The Federal Government has introduced new tax-free allowances for university teachers as part of efforts to improve the welfare of academic staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The initiative, which forms part of ongoing education sector reforms, is aimed at supporting lecturers financially and strengthening the university system. Officials say the tax-free allowances are designed to reduce the tax burden on academic staff while encouraging productivity and stability in public universities.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that improved welfare packages for lecturers could help boost morale, enhance teaching quality, and reduce the likelihood of industrial actions in the sector.
The move comes amid continued discussions between the government and academic unions on funding, staff welfare, and the overall development of Nigeria’s university education system.
