Senegal Stripped of AFCON Title, Morocco Declared Champions

In a dramatic and controversial decision, the Confederation of African Football has stripped Senegal national football team of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded it to Morocco national football team.

The ruling came after CAF’s appeal board determined that Senegal violated competition rules by walking off the pitch during the final in protest of a late penalty decision.

Although Senegal returned to complete the match and originally won 1–0 after extra time, CAF ruled that the temporary walk-off constituted a forfeiture, and the result was officially changed to a 3–0 victory for Morocco

 Why Senegal Lost the Title

  • Senegal players left the pitch for about 15 minutes in protest.

  • CAF regulations state that leaving the field without permission leads to automatic forfeiture

  • The governing body applied these rules and overturned the final result.

Morocco Crowned Champions

  • Morocco are now officially declared AFCON champions.

  • The final score is recorded as 3–0 in their favour

  • It marks Morocco’s second AFCON title and their first since 1976.

 Reaction and Fallout

The decision has sparked major controversy across African football:

  • Senegal’s football federation has rejected the ruling and plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)

  • Players and fans have expressed anger, calling the decision unfair.

  • The incident has raised concerns about discipline, officiating, and governance in African football.

 Summary

  • Senegal’s AFCON title has been revoked.

  • Morocco are officially declared champions after a 3–0 forfeit ruling.

  • The decision is one of the most controversial in AFCON history.
